POWDER COATING
The finishing stage of the manufacturing process often has the shortest leadtimes to work within and our clients are under huge pressure to ensure that their schedules are maintained. The leadtimes up to this stage are often eaten into and it is only when the work arrives for finishing that a site erection date becomes imminent.
Understanding the importance of meeting these deadlines to the quality required is vital in our business as finished products often require additional work such as drilling and milling, rolling and taping before being sent to site.
Tomburn has grown from the architectural market where specialising in high quality powder coatings and its application, ensures excellent adhesion in difficult and harsh environments . This has given Tomburn the expertise it needs to gain the competitive edge in the powder coating market by offering the highest quality standards.

The company has numerous conveyorised spray booths, tunnel and camel back ovens and a large box oven. This enables Tomburn to have the capacity and flexibility to service our customers needs with the ability to powder coat most shapes and sizes.
POWDER GUARANTEES
Guarantees are available on Aluminium and Hot Dipped Galvanised Steel. Undoubtedly, aluminium to BS1470, BS 1471 and BS1474 provides the best surfaces for coatings which will be both decorative and offer long lasting protection.
However, individual product performance can be obtained for non-aluminium substrate and Tomburn, working in conjunction with its suppliers, have tested a number of products that meet the requirements of the Automotive and MOD markets for Mild Steel. Please ask our Technical Support for further information.

MARINE ENVIRONMENTS
In harsh environments such as Marine and Industrial locations, Swimming Pools and even the extreme climate of the Middle East, Tomburn are able to offer performance guarantees from 5 to 40 years based on site specific analysis.
Eleven years after installation and with constant exposure to the harsh marine environment, the powder coated finish applied by Tomburn to The Second Severn River Crossing, is still consistent in both colour and gloss.
The following conditions are standard requirements in order to qualify for a marine guarantee:-
- 60 microns minimum film thickness
- All joints must be sealed with an approved mastic
- Exposed bare metal edges should be avoided
- Cleaning should be carried out at intervals not exceeding 3 months
Marine Guarantees must be applied for prior to coating commences and a Request Form should be completed and returned to our Sales Team in order for this to be approved.
Marine Guarantees are only available in Matt and Matt Metallic finishes and the duration offered is dependant on the severity of the environment.
POWDER COATING PROCESS
1. Goods Inwards
The product is checked for suitability for processing, quantity, possible issues with hook or jig marks and if there are any masking requirements. The colour and manufacturer of the finish required will also be confirmed at this stage.
2. Metal Preparation
The basis of any good coating is preparation and the vast majority of powder coating failures can be traced to a lack of a suitable preparation.
Tomburn has numerous methods for preparing substrate for coating including Shotblasting, Phosphating, Chromate Conversion, Etch and Zinc Rich Sprays. The system used is dependant on the metal finishing process required by the client.
The suitability and the mix of these processes can be discussed with the our Sales Team.
3. Powder Coating
3.1 - It is imperative that whatever the means of transporting the product through the process, the substrate has a good earth.

3.2 - The powder is fluidised by vibratation to prevent clogging or clumping which ensures a smooth flow. Tomburn have a mixture of manual and automatic electrostatic guns which apply a charge to the powder so that it is attracted to the metal.

3.3 - The powder evolves through four stages within the curing cycle (melt, flow, gel, cure) which fuses the powder together into a continuous film. The final coating will vary from high gloss to flat matt depending on the design of the powder by the supplier.
It is important to note that it is not the temperature of the oven that is as important, but the temperature and the duration that the substrate reaches.
Interpon PZ 770
Interpon PZ 770 is a zinc rich powder primer which is part of a 2 coat powder system, designed to give enhanced corrosion protection to steel.
Interpon PZ 770 has been designed to be applied to steel which has been shot blasted to SA.2.5 and over coated with Interpon topcoats such as D36, D2525 and Interpon EC.
An intermediate coat of Interpon BPP 330 can be applied after the PZ 770 primer to provide an effective marine grade finish.
